My Granny wasn't actually in the war she was a child in the war and lived in a small village. When ever the air raid siren went off the whole village had to go into the bomb shelter so they weren't harmed. It could happen any time, even in the middle of the night & everybody would just have to jump out of bed & run to the bomb shelter. The siren had a loud wailing sound so that everybody could hear it. She had to carry a gas mask around with her everywhere in a box around her neck and was taught how to put it on. Every day & night during the war she had to have black out curtains so that German bombers couldn't see any lights from the village and it would make it difficult for them to see where to bomb. Food was very limited during the war because there were less people to work in factories and do the harvesting due to so many men being called up to fight as soldiers. You had little coupons in a ration book which you would have to tear out and give in to the shops so that everyone was allowed the same amount of food. Obviously people could still grow their own produce which helped to supplement their diets. My Granny got annoyed by this because they didn't get any luxuries to eat. Luckily there was only three people in her family because she was an only child. It was her mum, dad & my Granny. There was an American air base near to their house and she used to ask the American airmen for their gum.
They had some evacuee children come and live with them for a short time from London until it was safe for them to return to their homes.
