My father was 25 at the outbreak of the war and,was I think, in the first draft of conscripts. His initial training was with The Sherwood Foresters(He always maintained that one of his officers was the actor Richard Greene-later to play Robin Hood in the popular series in the fifties)
Anyway-having small feet(size 7)he had great trouble getting a pair of army boots to fit and was not much comforted by being told that he had to shoot seven Germans before getting a pair of size sevens.I think he did get some to fit before he went into action-I hope he did!!
