The story is about my father who died when I was six. I understand that my father was cut off from his regiment and he and another person were trying to bring in a load of wounded soldiers to Dunkirk for the evacuation. He was driving this truck, with another person beside him and a load of wounded in the back. As they reached Dunkirk a shell hit the truck. My father was wounded and had shrapnel in his leg. The other guy was injured. All of those in the back were killed however. My father was rescued on the beach by two medics - one turned out to be a brother of my mother - my father's brother in law! My father got home safely - I understand from my uncle that my father was regarded as a hero, but he never spoke about his experiences and was invalided out from the service. I have his cap badge, blazer badge and a ribbon with two medals a 39-45 star and a general service medal. That is all I know - whether he ever received a pension, medal or anything else we never knew.
