During heavy shelling from the Germans near Montecassino, my father, Michael Anthony McKendrick, fell into a cellar with three others.
It was full of wine!
They stayed there for a week and drank the lot. When they surfaced the front line had moved ten miles. They claimed they were trapped and were, as they put it, ‘Disappointed that no one had heard them shouting, “Help!â€â€™
