I was an air gunner on a Halifax bomber, part of a thousand bomber raid over Stuttgart. The objective was to dive to 1300ft after the payload was released.

I looked up just in time to see another Halifax beginning its dive above us. I shouted over the intercom, "Pilot! Dive to Port!" to avoid the collision. It was a close shave. I watched as the the other aircraft wing scraped inches away from our wing.
