Three in a thousand
Bound out of London
Each luggage-labelled
Child’s destination.
Safety in leaving
Bombing and shrapnel.
Two girls and a boy,
Seven, eight and nine.
Gas masks and kisses,
Roped-up old cases;
Going to Granny’s,
Granny in Cardiff.
Porters and whistles,
High step compartment.
Pushing and shoving,
Blur of the journey.
“Witches don’t cuddle,
have bright shiny eyes!
Evacuees.
Geoff Gaskill
I was evacuated 1940 to Cardiff but from there was then evacuated to mid Wales due to bombing of the docks in Cardiff. In all, as a result of the bombing, I went to about ten different schools, leaving at fourteen years of age.
