This story was submitted to the People’s War website by Jenny, a pupil from Teversham Primary School on behalf of Ena Marina Jolly and has been added to the site with her permission and she fully understands the site’s terms and conditions.

I was six towards the end of the war. The Americans would come and pick us up in the big army trucks. They would drive us back to the American camps and throw a big party. They said “Do you want some gum chum?” They gave us chocolate, ice cream and jelly. My sister played the piano. They gave us presents. They said “Father Christmas is coming” and got us all quiet. Someone would go outside and ring a bell. Then they would call us one at a time.
