I remember the summer of 1939 - it was very hot in our house in Norwich, a bit like its been this year (2005). Norwich is very flat and you could see for miles and miles and I remember one day looking up at the cloudless blue sky and seeing a German plane. It dropped a bomb somewhere nearby and then flew back to wherever it had come from.
My father(David Williams) ran the Labour Exchange in Norwich and he had been given very specific instructions if, as we'd feared, the Germans invaded. Those instructions had been to evacuate the area and leave homes unlocked for the British military to use. The first main line of defence was to be to protect London. We moved to London for a short time before going to Cardiff and he took me on a tour. Daddy took me everywhere - St Paul's, Westminster Abbey, Houses of Parliament. It was as if he wanted me to see it all before any potential invasion.
