I was sent over to Normandy on D-day. Because the weather was so dreadful our sailing was postponed, but the storm made us all sick. We crossed the channel and climbed down to a landing ship. Then we were up to our chests in water and I had to hold my rifle over my head.
All around me in the water were dead bodies, but somehow or other I made it to Hérouville without a scratch.
It was a month before we were able to have a bath and clean clothing. We were absolutely stinking.
I finished my war service in Bremen as a Lieutenant.
