This story was given to me by my granda Mr
Geordie McAdam.
When the war broke out i was 1 and my brother was 3.We lived with our mum and dad
in a street called Palmer Street. Our house was in the middle of a big place which was surrounded by factories, mills, shipyards and other industries. This was why the children had to leave their homes and go to the countryside away from Belfast where there were no factories just farms. The Germans bombed these factories and shipyards to stop making weapons like guns and tanks to defend ourselves. Mum and Dad put some clothes into a suitcase and tied a little label with our names and address and tied it to our coat lapel. When the first bombs fell without warning we all hid under the staircase. This was because the German planes missed the factories and hit our houses killing many people, so Mum and Dad told us we had to get out of Belfast away from the bombs. We were taken to the trainstation in the next street that night. I was seven when th ewar ended. We had great fun at the farm where we lived dn we used to go to the top ofg the hill and look down at Belfast. We could see all the fires burning and it lit up the whole sky. When we returned to to our house all the roof was missing so we helped our dad to fix it up.
