When I was 14 I finished school on the Friday of my fourteenth birthday and started work on the Monday. This was on the first of October 1943. I was working in the offices of Humber Ltd on the Humber Road where my father worked. He'd arranged it as my job. I worked as the office errand girl and was a dogsbody really. Then I went to work on the accounting machines. This meant I used to do the accounts and wages. I was there for 12 and a half years. During the war I went from a school girl to a working woman.
