(Told to Christine Barker at the VE Day Commemoration in Beverley 2005)

As a young man I served, was wounded and was a prisoner of war on Crete.

If it hadn’t been for the Battle of Crete Germany would’ve won the war because for one thing we destroyed his paratroops, he never used them again after the Battle of Crete.

We also delayed the invasion of Russia by a few weeks, it wasn’t the Russians that beat the Germans, it was their winter. They were at Stallingrad when they froze to death. They ought to have all bloody froze to death.

People don’t realise that if it wasn’t for what happened on Crete Germany would’ve won the war.
