As a child (of about seven years old) during the war I found it quite fun really. My lasting memories are of playing amongst the rubble after air raids. My friends and I would look for bomb craters. We would pick up bullet heads and sometimes half a bomb, which we used as paperweights! Our teacher was an air raid warden and used to confiscate them. Sensible in retrospect, but we were cross at the time!
