59 St Asaph Road
Brockley SE4

Thursday morning

My dear Win,

We are still all safe and the house is still standing, but we are now short of 7 windows and 1 frame. Monday night he again gave Brockley a share of his bombs, but Tuesday morning 9.30 was our bad time. I had mad a few local calls and was coming down Aspinall Rd [adjacent to St Asaph Rd] when the sirens went so made for my own dugout which I never reached perhaps it was just as well. I was just opening the door [to the house] when he dropped on in Revelon Rd [near Brockley railway station] demolishing Nos. 2, 4, 6 but oh the next I thought was for us. I laid down in the hall hoping for the best when the crash come I heard our windows smash and wondered what to expect however a 500lb one landed in Drakefell [Road-parallel to St Asaph] and brought down 5 houses to the ground. You know the Aspinall Park gates, [gates to Telegraph Hill Park well the first 5 going toward Pepys [Rd] and the houses opposite are completely blasted out and I should say at least 12 are not any further use for living in we caught the blast all along our backs [of the houses] and most of our houses are windowless, at the back, our bedroom came in for most damage, the whole window and frame was busted in and if it hadn’t been for all the sticky paper some of our furniture must have been damaged, instead the windows came out whole smashed in hundreds of pieces but held together by the paper. Mr Gost has got one bedroom window out also the bathroom the iron catch on the lavatory window is smashed. I think we faired very well considering what dropped.

I think Tuesday night was one of the worst night raids we have had, they say about 1000 planes dropped bombs on London, from reports it seems every place had a share, Brockley certainly did, now last night I thought we should have had a quiet night owing to heavy rain but the sirens sounded as usual soon after 7 o/c but only three bombs fell in Brockley as far as I know, 1 Revelon, 1 Brakespear 1 Wickham. Well my dear I think the people staying in London are standing up to it wonderfully you hardly hear a complaint although the damage is awful.

This is all for now trusting you are both well and free from any danger.

God Bless you both and may he keep us all safe until this dreadful affair is over.

Your Loving Hubby Frank XXXXX

For my son Francis XXXXXX

I called in home [the home of his in-laws at Credon Rd. Bermondsey] to see if they were alright and Mum [mother-in-law — Selina Brown] had the nerve to say where can we go to get out of this. I told her she wouldn’t go if you could so why mention it.

Frank
