My dad, Harry Howe, was stationed in Dunkirk where he drove supply lorries for the NAAFI.An order came to abandon the lorry and get down to the beach and on to a boat.
Dad, being dad, jettisoned the contents of his knapsack and replaced them with cigarettes from the supplies on the lorry.
He reached the beach, waded out to a boat, got aboard safely but was worn out. He found a spot to sleep and made himself as comfortable as he could using his knapsack as a pillow. When he eventually woke his pillow had gone!!
He never got over it. Not to his dying day.!!
