On September 3rd 1939 at 11am I heard my first air raid siren sounds. I was living in London at the time, I was 4 1/2 years old and my brother was only 8 months old.
We caught a tram from old kent road to Waterloo Station where we caught a train and ended up at Yeovil Train station. From here we caught a bus to South Petherton and we assembled in the Blake Hall.
We were chosen by the daughter of a family surnamed Holbrook to live with them in Over Stratton. We stayed with them for 6 months. After this our Father who was in the Army (Previously in the TA) took us back to London for Christmas and left again on New Year. This was the last we saw of him as he died in Burma.
We went back to South Petherton whilst the blitz carried on in London. Each Child was allocated a bedroom and kitchen. There were 22 children and mums in the house.
My Mother has been buried in South Petherton and my Brother now lives in Yeovil.
