I was 3 when war broke out. I lived in a bungalow on Monks Road, I kmew something had changed, air raid shelters were built, Florence Street had a tank blocade at the end of it.
In 1942 a new fire engine arrived in Lincoln, it was grey not red. Walking into town one day I saw it practicing with the 10 foot ladder extended. I used to look through the windows of the fire station wishing I could drive it. After 25 years my wish was granted when I drove it, then painted red, on the London to Brighton Commercial run.
