It was a few days after D-Day, 1944, and my mission was to go to Caen and bomb the German stronghold which was holding up the advance. Down on the ground I could see the Red Cross and, as I turned, I saw the naval battle ships firing at the Germans. I looked up and straight ahead I saw the Americans flying across the Channel. It was the greatest thing I saw during the whole war.
