I remember as a 4yr old child being put on a train in London (I think it was Liverpool St). I had a small label tied to my coat collar, we eventually arrived in Olney, and a group of us kids were left standing in the market square being inspected by the local people. I was taken by the local cobbler to his house, but within a short time( he probably was fed up with my tantrums) I was removed and went to live with a family who lived a few doors down the road, I stayed with this family all through the war period an did not return to London in 1946. I think this was a bigger shock to me because for the past few years I was able to roam about the local countryside with other kids of my own age, to return to London and find the area of Hackney was bit of a tip, was not a happy time in my life.
All I can remember of the war was the night they bombed Coventry when we all slept under the stairs. I will always think of the people who looked after me during my younger years as my parents and went back to stay with them many times
