I was working on a farm during the war. My husband was a farmer, and I was a cheese and butter maker, and I milked the cows. The farm was near Stranraer. And I used to help with the harvesting. There were six of us, including the workers. That was hard work, because it was manual work in those days.

The war wasn’t too bad where we were, really. My husband got off for being a farmer, so he didn’t get called up. We worked on a big farm. The man who owned it had a big place elsewhere. He was a businessman. When he died, my husband gave it up and we moved to Cholmondely. My husband was 90 last week.
