All the neighbours on our street organised a party to celebrate the end of the war. Bunting was hung across the street from window to window. We had all kind of nice food and somebody played the accordian for us to dance to. A bonfire was built in the middle of the cul-de-sac and we placed an effigy of Hitler on top. At the end of the night when it became dark we set the bonfire alight. Knowing that the war was fianlly over was such a relief. Some families in the street had sons who had fought and they knew now that they would be coming home safely so we left the bunting up to celebrate their return.
