This story was submitted to the website by Karolina Kopiec from ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ GMR Action Desk on behalf of Mrs C. Powell and has been added to the site with their permission.

The main thing I remember is being evacuated at Stoke-on-Trent. We lived in Ardwick then and hated it to be evacuated, my mother came to see me on my 14th birthday which was 24/9/39 and she took me home with her. The next thing was every time the air raids came we hid under the table, never in the shelters.
And then the Ardwick picture house got bombed. They were after the Barracks at Ardwick Green, but got the picture house instead. The roads were full of debris and water.
And of course, I remember the rationing, no sweets, and the black outs.
