Just down the road from where I live now, at Broadholme, I remember a plane crashing minutes before reaching Scampton on a return journey from a night raid.
The Army searchlight had to lace poles in fields around our airfields to stop German planes landing. It was a good idea but meant that our boys coming back in trouble also couldn't land.
