1 TOYS
I was 15 months old when war was declared in September 1939 so I never knew what it was like in those more affluent pre-war days. Most of my toys were inherited from Moore, my brother, who 6 years older than I, had been given a new teddy, a robust metal tricycle, and Bruno the brown bear that you dragged along behind you on wheels. On special occasions I was allowed to play with Mary, a French china faced doll with real hair, and her companion, Viola, from Germany, both of which had belonged to my mother and aunt and which were later sold as antiques. My own dolls were soft faced, “rag” dolls which my grandmother despised, saying they were the ugliest dolls she’d ever seen but which were treasures to me, who knew nothing better.
