In 1944, my sister, Mary Grant drove ambulances with wounded British soldiers to various hospitals. At the same time, she took wounded P.O.W.s with two British soldiers sitting in the back as guards. On occasions, she would call home for a cuppa and tell Mam how many cuppas she required. One day, in 1944, she called and told Mam, “Five cuppas please.” Mam made the cuppas and took them outside on a tray, gave my sister hers and the two British soldiers theirs. In the back of the ambulance, lo and behold, two wounded German soldiers. With no more ado, she went into the house and came back brandishing the steel poker, saying words to the effect, “They may have killed some of our lads, but they won’t kill any more!!” The British Guards managed to wrest the poker from her and calm her down. Toot sweet!.
