I was twelve years old and sent as an avacuee to Ripon in Yorkshire to a large farmhouse that had been used to having a number of servants who had all been commandeered for war duty. The owners used me as a substitute servant, I had to scrub floors, light fires and do heavy manual work around the place. I was not allowed to eat in the dining room and given minimal rations. I was not allowed to speak or play with the other children who were evacuated with me. I was threatened with punishment if I was seen talking to anyone while I was working.
My mother came to visit and after she returned home was so worried, she came back and gave the farmer and his wife a piece of her mind, packed up my belongings and brought me back home
