I really did not understand
when Mother grabbed me by the hand.
A walk in darkness. Know not where.
On my face - the cold night air.
Trinder Road; now number four.
At last we reach intended door.
A quick check over. Am I neat?
I'm tidied up from head to feet.
Unfamiliar room and bed.
When I rose I bumped my head.
Cried for mummy. Where WAS she?
"Your mammy's gone, now you're with me"
This lovely family took me in.
They became my next of kin.
Brothers, sister, all was new
Life from such a different view.
Memories I now hold dear.
Always love and never fear.
Grey cottage haven - rain or shine.
The Prior family now was mine.
When Auntie sat me on her knee,
a Chinese song she sung to me.
The games we played on winters' eves,
then off to bed with bread and cheese.
In war, no child could happier be.
From bombs and fire was forced to flee.
I was that small evacuee
and gained a sister. LUCKY ME!
