The day that war broke out I was on holiday, we were staying in Manchester, I was sent home immediately.
I was to be sent to Kendall as an evacuee. Mum and Dad packed for me,my school bag. a change of clithing and a gas mask which we carried. Dad also put my name on my knife, fork and spoon. We all had an identification tag. My soster was not sent to the same. place. We were taken to the station and put on a train, we had no idea where we were going as all the signs had been taken down in case of invasion. This would prevent invaders knowing where they were. I found it exciting.
When we arrived we were taken to the church hall, some of the children were very small and very scared.
The hall was full of people who lived in Kendall, the system they used of deciding who took which child was "I`ll take that one". A lovely family took me and really looked after me. I was quite good at sums so I often went to the village shop to add up the cash for them. I was about 13 years old at the time. I stayed in Kendall for some time only returning when my mother was ill to look after her. When I was old enough I joined the W.A.A.F.S as a wirless mechanic.
I look back with pleasure at those times.
