The Doodlebugs were the most terrifying part of the war for me. I was only about 12 at the time, but i still remember the awful sounds of the V1's overhead, and praying that the sound would not stop.
One night I was walking along the road, when I started to hear the dreadful noise overhead. Everywhere was dark, so I couldn't see where it was, but just as it was coming over my head, the sound stopped. I stood frozen, not knowing what to do, just hoping that it would glide past and not fall straight down.
When nothing happened near me, I figured I was safe. It turned out that the Doodlebug had landed quite a distance away.
Looking back on that incident, i was very lucky to not have been killed.
