On VE day we were staying at Corfe Castle at the village house of an elderly couple Mr and Mrs Honour. I was then 4 and therefore they may not have been as old as I thought! My mother, sister and I had travelled by train from Slough. My father was travelling all over the country, Rosyth one minute and Chatham the next, a motor cyclist coming with Admiralty signals from the Compass Observatory at Datchet to send him off again. He could not come.
I remember the night of VE day as one of tremendous excitement and confusion for me. In the main square I saw soldiers climbing up a 'pole' to light a huge brazier. The flames lept high and following 'blackout' this was indeed something different. People were singing and dancing..the whole world was joyously crazy.
