My mother was a SOE Special Operations Excecutive, she was traveling in a troop truck with an army convoy down the Great North Road (now the A1). There was an accident ahead, all the head lights were half covered and didn’t give out much light and everyone was dressed in khaki, they didn’t know how to stop the on coming traffic. My mother had bought a dressing gown for me in Cambridge, which everyone had teased her about, as they did not believe she was old enough to have a daughter. The dressing gown which was pale pink outside and white inside was used to flag down the traffic and save a further accident.
