Wartime memories of Kempston, Bedford.

Mrs. Joyce Lowe

Kempston, Bedford

This story was submitted to the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ People’s War site by Jenny Ford on behalf of Mrs. Joyce Lowe and has been added to the site with her permission. The author fully understands the site’s terms and conditions.

I lived in Kempston all my life. My boss went to Japan and he never came back again. I got married and my husband went in the Army. He was a Staff Sergeant in the Army Ordnance and was posted to South Nottingham and he stayed with a miner and his wife.

I worked in a Solicitors office and I had a daughter in 1942. We lived with my mother initially and she looked after my daughter while I went to work and did the shopping.

I was at the First Aid Post when the land mine landed near Kempston Barracks. (14th November 1941). I did First Aid training with Dr. Richards in Kempston and undertook duties at the First Aid Post during the war.

My father was in the Fire Brigade where he worked at Meltis.
