This story was submitted to the People’s War website by a volunteer from CSV/ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ London on behalf of Bill Julian and has been added to the site with his permission. Mr. Julian fully understands the site’s terms and conditions.

I helped to land commandos on D Day. We landed first thing in the morning around 8.30 - 9.00am on the Sword Beach area. As soon as we got rid of our commandos, we got back in touch with our destroyer and asked them what we should do as we did not have any orders as they thought we would be sunk and we weren’t. They said we might as well get back to the UK, so we did. Us and one of the other boats helped another boat which had been badly damaged. Once our boat was repaired we went back to Normandy. We were helping to unload the troop ships and chasing one man submarines. We had all sorts of jobs for another 3 months then we came back to the UK.

I heard the news that the European war was over I got ashore as quickly as possible and me and my mates made for the nearest pub to celebrate. I can’t remember getting back to the ship that night.
