This story was submitted to the People's War Site by Joan Smith on behalf of Doreen, and was added to the site with her permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

A long time after the war had ended my mother told me that she decided if Britain were to be invaded she would sacrifice the lives of my brother and me rather than let us fall into the hands of Germans. She was prepared to take our lives by gassing us. This would have meant that she - as a committed Christian - would have by this act sacrificed also her own soul.
