Mile End School was transformed into an official First Aid Post and manned night and day by volunteers under the command of Dr Mary Esslemont and Dr Walker. It also had a warning siren on the roof, so there was no chance of anybody in the West End of Aberdeen not knowing what might be happening. Those on duty all night bunked down on camp beds with hairy army blankets.

In my time there, we only had one "casualty" and that was a drunk who tripped on the pavement on Richmondhill Road and knocked himself out!

The night the German plane dropped a bomb into Rubislaw Quarry, the ground fairly shook - presumably it had upset the granite seam which runs down Hamilton Place. In fact, after that, several houses in that area had staircases damaged as a result.
