I was in the Airforce in 1942 in Cornwall. I got an urgent wire telling me to come straight home as my wife was expecting our baby, it took 12 / 14 hours to get to Nottingham. When I got there they said it was a false alarm and for us to go home. She wouldn’t go back into hospital after that and when she did go into labour I was the midwife. The worst thing about it was that the pubs were shut so there was no beer!
