Aged five in 1939 and living at 30 Davison Avenue
Whitley Bay. The sound of the Air Raid Siren which announced the outbreak of war. I seem to remember asking my Father what it was, but do not remember the reply. It was a very eerie sound, and certainly made an impression for the memory to have lasted so long.

Further Memories -

As a family we were moved from the coast, the house being taken over for forces billets I believe. For a short time we lived with friends and grandparents, eventually settling in Kenton Newcastle on Tyne. A period of evacuation in Summer of 1940 followed. This was a family affair: my parents and a work colleague of my fathers organised use and running of a Guest House in the the Lake District at Braithwaite until we had Air Raid shelters back at home in Newcastle.
