I was born at the start of WW11. I was told that the midwife and doctor were far more interested in discussing the ongoing news of the battle of the River Plate than in my delivery.

My first memory of the war was when I was 1 - 2 years old, in Castle Bromwich, Birmingham, at night, under a reinforced table known as a Morrison shelter. Bombs were thudding in the distance, and I was annoying all and sundry by bouncing up and down and shouting "Boom Boom".

My father joined the Royal Engineers from 1943 to 1946 as Lt. Leslie Warne, was in Belgium and Holland after D-Day, and has many tales to tell...
