Cheltenham Proprietary College opened in 1841 for the education of the sons of gentlemen. It quickly became known as Cheltenham College. From the start it was a boarding and day school, divided into Classical and Military sides until the mid-20th century. It is now an independent fee-paying school, fully co-educational since 1998.
Cheltenham College Archives exists to locate, collect and preserve records of all kinds relating to the College, and to make them available for research. As well as the official records of Cheltenham College and of the Cheltonian Society, the records include personal papers of former pupils, staff and members of the governing Council - many such records having been donated by individuals. Although the records relating to World War 2 are not as plentiful as those relating to the Great War, a lot of information can nonetheless be gleaned - for instance, what was happening at an independent school during the last war, when and where former pupils served, and background information on individuals detailing their lives at school.
