I worked for the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ in Manchester and we decided to do a series of programmes about how the North West was involved.Lancaster bombers were built here, as were planes at Fairey Aviation. Warships were built at Birkenhead and Barrow. Pluto (Pipe Line under the ocean) to supply fuel across the channel was made at Glovers Cables in Trafford Park. Ringway was used to train parachute troops and agents. There were munition factories at Crewe, Risley, Chorley and Blackburn.
The home front with the Blitz's on Manchester aand Liverpool. Rationing and shortages of everything. So I became interested in all things do do withthe war on the home front.
