I was born 1938 and as a youngster living in London not far from the Royal Small Arms factory so heard the bombs falling and seeing the damage done to the houses. My father was at Dunkirk with the Royal Artillery, my recollection of him was seeing a soldier in the house for a short time but my eyes were fixed on the rifle leaning up against the window sill, he then went and I never saw him again till 1946.
My vivid memories were of the doodle bugs. When the siren went off and it was too late to go to the shelters I was put at the back of the gas cupboard under the stairs with my aunt who was two years older then my Mother and my Nan had her head in the doorway with the rest of her out in the hallway, the silence when the doodle bug stopped was really scary while waiting for the explosion.
