Early in 2001 I began researching my uncle, Flight Sergeant John Cooper who was killed in a training accident on the night of 20th April 1944 at RAF Stradishall. Since then, I have traced and I am now in constant contact with Hector Frew, a New Zealander who survived the crash, and who still lives in New Zealand.
At the time of the accident, a WAAF returning on her bike from a night out, ran over to assist and protect Hector from the explosions. She was well spoken and had blonde hair but we do not know her name. Hector would love to know what happened to her.
I have been interviewed on ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio Solent and Suffolk, together with National Radio New Zealand in the hope of tracing her for Hector. Despite the story also being published in local papers, to date we are still looking for her.
Although I am still attempting to trace this brave WAAF, I have now also managed to trace 2 of Hector's wartime friends and have put them in touch again after nearly 60 years. This has given me great pleasure as it is like a "thank you" to Hector for helping me so much with my research. Indeed, we have become good friends and he is now part of the family.
