In 1995 the staff and pupils of Harrogate Grammar School commemorated the 50th anniversary of VE Day with a special day of activities and workshops. This year the History department, in conjunction with the rest of the school, have decided once again that it would like to remember the many different experiences of World War II and enable both staff and pupils to learn about this important event in our history. We hope to do this in many different ways, not least on our day of commemoration on the 11th July 2005 for which we are lottery funded. This will include workshops on food; make-do and mend; entertainment and representatives from Her Majesty’s armed forces to help us learn about the period. However, we also want to recognise the contributions of those people around us and therefore a large portion of time throughout the year will go into creating an oral history archive of our friends and relatives on the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ People’s War site. We would be very interested in recording the stories of those involved in World War II whether it was on the front line, the home front, or even as an evacuee! However little you think you did we want to hear from you and collect a full range of experiences. You may have even been involved with conscientious objection during the conflict or have an experience that reaches far beyond Harrogate into one of the many countries and territories that were involved in the war. Many of the pupils will be carrying out the interviewing and thus connecting with different generations at first hand. So, if you have a story about anything in World War II, about Harrogate in the 1940s, or about the Commonwealth War graves Commission cemetery at Stonefall we would love to include it in our archive and help to build a full picture on this page.
