Is this the man ?

Is this the man who had such golden dreams
When life was young and fresh
Like any flowing mountain stream
Which bursts into the world so clean and bright ?
Is this the man ?

Is this the man who braved the beach in Normandy
Led by the piper's call,
While all around him, friend and foe,
In mortal agony did fall alike ?
Is this the man ?

Is this the man who gloried in the victory glow
And strode erect and trim,
Beribboned, and with head held high ?
Is this the man who sad and grey
Awaits the final hymn ?
