ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½

I was nearly eight years old when WWII started and I lived in Peterborough, a cathedral city which at that time was in Northamptonshire but is now part of Cambridgeshire.
Despite having several large factories involved in wartime production, a Royal Ordnance factory, an important railway marshalling yard and an RAF flying training aerodrome, it was still considered safe enough for London evacuees to be sent to!
Naturally, most of my memories are to do with the time that I was at school - a time when the only male teacher was the head but, as he was the local ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Guard CO he was often seen at school in his uniform and this served as a further reminder that we were at war.
Because Peterborough had several aerodromes within a radius of a dozen or so miles, there was always a lot of aerial activity to observe and this must have had a lot to do with my lifelong interest in aviation and my eventual service with the Royal Air Force.
