hi,
i am kirsty, the granddaughter of Harold Smalley, who was a POW in WW2.
I sat with my grandad yesterday and he spoke of times he chose not to remember for many many years. It brings a lump to my throat and tears to my eyes, as i recall what he told me.
It was his birthday, he was 91!!!! ...and is fantastic for his age, i am not just saying that cos he is my grandad, his health is amazing.
He constantly says he shouldnt be here after all he has seen and been through.
He lives a full, busy life, goes on holiday often, he just got back from Northern Ireland, plays bowls for Coalville, likes to have a little bet on the horses, a couple halfs of beer while playing dominoes and walks most places.
Everything in moderation, he always tells me.
He is my idol.
I decided to try and write down the stories he tells me, after all, how is my generation and the next going to know how it really was for these brave men and brave women during this terrible time in ww2.
Think i best invest in a dictaphone to help me remember exaclty how he tells it.
wish me luck!!
thanks for reading
god bless
kirsty x
