I attended school in Bedford during the war, and one morning before lessons, we were in the playground when an aircraft appeared low in the sky, we knew from the droning sound of the engines that it was a German plane. we all looked up and watched, as it passed across the sky, and saw several bombs fall from it.The teacher shouted to us to run inside, which we did. Later we heard that the Royal County Theatre had been bombed, I think that the target was the railway station, which was close by. On another ocasion, I recall sitting under the stairs and hearing the distinctive drone of many German aircraft overhead, my mother said that she heard them returning the next morning.Afterwards the news reported that there had been a terrible raid on Coventry, and the Cathedral had been almost completely destroyed.
