It was about the 3rd week in August 1939 the day to return to school after the holidays. Walking toward Rutland Street School I saw a number of boys reading something on the school gate while others were jumping around in glee. "What's it all about?" I asked. "School's not starting yet," someone said with a big smile and we all wandered off not realizing the school was closed
indefinitely.

About a week later evacuation of school children from London started and some days later Germany invaded Poland. Two days after that, Britain was at war and would be for the next six years. Life, as we had known it was about to change forever.

My name is Harold Harris and I would be pleased to hear from anybody that might know me from the 1930's onwards.

I was born in the the East End and lived in New Road opposite Nelson Street. I went to Settle Street Infants School, Myrdle Street Infants School and Rutland Street Junior Boys School until August 1939.
