Cloth Ears

By Hannah Ratcliffe

After being made redundant in 2007, Julie Bevan got on with decorating her new home in Whitstable on a budget. Friends complimented her designs made on vintage materials and she was inspired to set up her own company.

Julie explains Cloth-Ears from the summerhouse at the end of her garden where she creates all her Cloth-Ear items; from knitted toys, to felt cases, to cushions.

When Julie and her fiancé Paul and their cat moved into a little cottage in Whitstable, she wanted to create a cosy home with accessories that have a nostalgic warm feel.

Julie found she could see the products in her head but could not see them in the shops. So out came the sewing machine and after tracking some vintage fabrics from her childhood Julie soon made her house vibrant and homely.

Friends started complimenting Julie's designs, commissions quickly came inÌý and Cloth-Ears was born!

It began as a little 'part-time project' and is now, a full-time business, Cloth-Ears has several dedicated crafts people.

And the profile of Cloth-Ears is growing, one of Julie's knitted characters has appeared on EastEnders and on Harry Hill's TV Burp.
