Play It Again: Mass Observation

Back in the 1930s, Lancastrians were the subject of a bizarre social experiment...which inspired a Victoria Wood drama.

The experiment calledÌý'Mass Observation'Ìýwas carried out by an organisation backed by the Government which aimed to record everyday life in Britain.Ìý

In 2002, ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio Lancashire's Paul O'Gorman looked into the project which aimed to find out about the working classes in Lancashire. In reality, the study was a group of highly educated academics with posh accents who began a survey to try to discover how we lived our lives by asking some pretty inane questions.

Victoria Wood's TV drama 'Housewife 49' was based on a Lancashire housewife's 'Mass Observation' diary.
